CHEER CHOSEN AS ONE OF ELMBRIDGE MAYOR'S CHARITIES

CHEER is thrilled that Councillor Tannia Shipley, who has been elected Mayor of Elmbridge, has chosen us as one of her two Mayor’s Charities for the coming year starting from May 2016. With people living longer, the elderly are a growing population and need more and more help. This means CHEER has an increasing demand for its work. The unique individual service we provide to the elderly in their own homes means that our current capacity is stretched to the limit. Any monies raised from the Mayor’s Charity will be used to help increase our capacity to meet the growing demand.

GETTING INVOLVED IN CLAYGATE

CHEER's stall at the Claygate Get Involved Day on 9th April was a great success.  Nicky Taylor, one of our trustees and volunteers, commented:"There was a lovely atmosphere that demonstrated what a wonderful community sprit there is in Claygate. CHEER had 12 volunteers/referrals so it was a big success for us. We are hoping Get Involved Day will be an annual event!"

HINCHLEY WOOD FUN DAY 2015

The CHEER  roadshow was at Hinchley Wood on Saturday 12th September for the annual Residents Association Fun Day.  The event was opened by Councillor Tannia Shipley, Deputy Mayor of Elmbridge, whom we are also fortunate to have as one of the Council representatives on our management board.  The showers kept away and we had a warm and sunny afternoon to spread the word about CHEER and raise funds.

Councillor Shipley visits our stall, with volunteers and trustees doing a great job to raise CHEER's profile in the community.

CLAYGATE FLOWER SHOW

Once again CHEER took to the greens to raise funds and promote our work, this time at the Claygate Flower Show on Saturday 11th July.  Fine weather helped a great day out for all concerned.

ESHER MAY FAIR

On Saturday 16th May 2015, CHEER was at the Esher May Fair to promote our work and raise funds.  Our sweetie tombola proved very popular and we were delighted by the high level of interest shown in our work, including from several people who wanted to find out more about joining us as volunteers.

WAITROSE COMMUNITY MATTERS

CHEER has once again been chosen as one of the three nominated charities to receive a share of £1,000 from the 'green token' scheme at Waitrose Esher.  Please help us by putting your tokens in the CHEER box at the store to maximise the amount which comes to us to support our work with local elderly people.

AFTERNOON TEA AT THE PHEASANTRY

Despite the rain doing its best to discourage our guests from venturing out, five intrepid CHEER friends and their befrienders joined staff and trustees at The Pheasantry Cafe in Bushy Park for afternoon tea on 14th June 2014. It was lovely to see everyone chatting away and enjoying the delicious scones and cakes. All freshly baked for us, they went down a treat, particularly the chocolate brownies, and anything left over was eagerly taken home for supper!

2014 AGM & HARRY LIVESEY'S RETIREMENT

At the AGM held on Tuesday 3rd June at the Claygate Centre for the Community, members and supporters were briefed on CHEER's achievements in 2013-14, which included:

  • increasing clients' income by over £318,000
  • over 145 staff visits to people in their homes
  • regular volunteer visits to 25 befriending clients
  • over 1500 volunteer hours contributed
  • welcoming 9 new befriending clients, and 11 new volunteers
  • organising 15 events for volunteers and clients (pie & pint lunches, tea parties in sheltered housing, befriending events and volunteer get-togethers).

You can download our 2013-14 Achievements Report here.

Two trustees (Pat Budge and Robert Fulton) stood down by rotation and were re-elected to the board.

A special resolution was passed to enable CHEER to offer services to clients living outside the existing area of coverage in appropriate circumstances.

We also said 'au revoir' to CHEER manager Harry Livesey, who is retiring after five years in charge, having seen the charity though a major period of change and reinforced its position as an effective and well-regarded service for the local elderly community.  As a token of our appreciation, Harry was presented with an engraved tankard and a selection of his favourite tipple, cider.

FRIDAY TEA AT THE FIRS

The Firs sheltered housing scheme in Claygate welcomed CHEER back for another tea party on Friday 9th May. There was a definite buzz created by the proceedings, with the scheme manager on duty commenting she could hear the chatting from her office which was very unusual. She was also delighted to see among the guests some residents who don’t usually join in with the group activities, preferring to keep themselves to themselves. From CHEER’s point of view that makes the whole event worthwhile. Thanks to The Firs for having us, see you all again soon.

TEA FOR TWO(-DOZEN) AT CHURCHFIELD HOUSE, COBHAM

Glorious sunshine heralded the latest CHEER tea party. Hosted at Churchfield House, Cobham for its residents and those of the surrounding Winstanley Walk, the tea party on 19th March ‘couldn’t have been nicer’, as one of our guests told us. Six of our superb volunteers served tea, cut cake and chatted to the lovely people who came along. Our newest volunteer, Cerian, played the piano for us, treating us to a beautiful medley of well-known tunes. On that note, Harry and Charlotte would like to take this opportunity to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who give their time to help at these tea parties.

TIME FOR TEA AT MANOR COURT

On Thursday 20th February 2014, two CHEER staff, two trustees and one of our excellent volunteers descended upon Manor Court sheltered house scheme with tea, coffee and cake. Eighteen residents joined us for a lively tea party, happily chatting together whilst enjoying the treat of being waited upon in their own lounge. The customary raffle was a huge success: the ‘star prize’ lucky dip bags proving a hit with the first few winners and everyone else finding something to their taste from the remaining grocery items. We mingled with our guests, chatting, listening and making sure they know how CHEER could help them should they need it. If the empty plates, drained teapots and cheery farewells are anything to go by, I think we can call it a success!

NEW YEAR CHEER AT THE MARQUIS

On Wednesday 15th January 2014, CHEER invited everyone involved with its befriending scheme to a hearty carvery at the Marquis of Granby in Esher. Seven of our befriendees joined us, along with their befrienders and a several trustees. Crackers were pulled to add a touch of festivity; paper hats were worn by a plucky few and many groans were heard in response to the cheesy jokes. It was a great event with everyone enjoying a good meal and some lively discussions. Thanks must go to the Marquis for the wonderful service which made the event even more enjoyable. To find out more about CHEER’s befriending scheme, see Services.

SPREADING GOOD CHEER AT 'THE FIRS'

On Friday 25th October 2013 CHEER held a tea party at The Firs, a sheltered housing scheme run by Elmbridge Housing Trust. Twenty ladies and gentlemen joined us for a wonderful afternoon of tea, cake and chat. The CHEER managers and four of their stalwart volunteers were on hand to make sure everything ran smoothly. A food raffle and ‘pound parcels’ went down a treat, with our guests each leaving with a token gift or two. We were delighted to see so many people join us for the afternoon, including a few people who admitted they don’t usually come down to the communal lounge. As one lady said: “[it] gives people the opportunity to meet more people during the day instead of being on our own watching TV”. At the end of the day that’s what CHEER is all about: tackling social isolation; and there’s no harm in having a very pleasant afternoon along the way!

The money was raised at the bowling clubs annual Captain’s Charity Supper which was held on Friday 23rd August 2013 and was attended by almost fifty members and their guests, all of whom enjoyed a splendid meal and some excellent entertainment.
