Volunteer with us

Our volunteers support clients in many ways, from offering companionship and a friendly face, to helping people access advice, services and social opportunities. They come from all walks of life and bring a wide range of skills, experience and enthusiasm. What they share is a genuine desire to support older people and strengthen their local community. Quite simply, we couldn’t deliver our services without them.

If you’re looking for a rewarding way to give back, volunteering with CHEER could be for you. Whether you have a few hours to spare or can commit more regularly, we’ll work with you to find a role that suits your time, interests and experience. Below are some of the roles that we have available.

By volunteering with CHEER, you’ll be helping older people feel happier, supported and more independent – while also gaining new skills, meeting like-minded people and becoming part of a warm, supportive team. Many of our volunteers tell us they gain just as much as they give, through new friendships, increased confidence and a strong sense of purpose.

Could you spend an hour a week sharing a friendly chat over a cup of tea and helping someone feel valued and connected? Our Befrienders offer regular visits or calls to local older people, bringing warmth, companionship and a welcoming presence. We match people thoughtfully, building genuine friendships that make a lasting difference to everyone involved.

Our community events give older residents a much-needed chance to get out, connect and feel part of something special. As an events volunteer, you’ll help create these warm and inclusive spaces — setting up, greeting guests, supporting activities and chatting with attendees. Some volunteers also help drive people to and from events, making sure everyone can take part, whatever their circumstances.

Could you spare some time to accompany a CHEER team member on home assessments? These visits are a key part of our Befriending and Benefits services, helping us reduce loneliness and ensure older residents receive the state benefits they’re entitled to. Your support helps make each visit supportive and truly impactful for the people we meet.

Our Members and Friends help us stay closely connected with our community. They’re invited to attend general meetings and other events, and members have the right to vote on the election of Trustees and on any resolutions at those meetings. There is no cost to becoming a Member or Friend — just a shared commitment to supporting our work.

We’re looking for Trustees who can bring fresh skills, insight and genuine commitment to our mission. Joining our board is a meaningful way to support your local community and help shape the future of our work with older residents. If you’re passionate about improving lives and have the enthusiasm to guide a small, dedicated charity, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
