Information and Advice

At CHEER, we know our clients and understand the challenges they face in their daily lives. When we see someone in need, we step in to offer support. If we cannot assist directly through our own services, we provide clear information and guidance about where to find the right help. Where appropriate, we refer clients to trusted local organisations that are best placed to meet their specific needs.

As the digital world continues to evolve, digital inclusion has become essential for everyday living. Yet, many older people struggle to access even the most basic services — such as booking GP appointments, managing their finances, or contacting their bank.

Combined with rising levels of poverty and loneliness, this can leave many feeling anxious, isolated, or unsure where to turn for help. Some are housebound or digitally excluded, and many lack the confidence or resources to navigate these challenges alone. Now, more than ever, our clients need the practical and personal support we provide.

Through our home visiting service for help with benefit claims, our befriending services, and regular contact at social events, we are able to identify unmet needs and respond with tailored support. We offer practical help and up-to-date information on community resources such as care alarms, wellbeing and social care services, and ways to stay active and healthy.

Supporting health and wellbeing

In 2024, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that during the winter months, 8,647 people aged 75 and over in England died unnecessarily from flu and pneumonia.

To help reduce such risks, CHEER actively reminds clients that they should receive invitations for their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, and, for those aged 65 and over, their pneumococcal vaccine. We follow up during our regular contact to ensure clients have received their invitations and know how to access these important vaccinations.

While this may seem a simple reminder, for many older people it is not — emails or text messages are often missed, and some are unaware that vaccinations can be arranged at their local pharmacy or even administered at home. That’s why CHEER plays a vital role in supporting and encouraging clients to access these preventative treatments, helping them stay safe and well throughout the winter months.
