Financial support from Walton Charity

Posted on 21st February 2019

We are delighted to have received generous grants from Walton Charity to support our expansion into West Elmbridge and the continuation of the Parkinson’s Group.

Our expansion into West Elmbridge will enable us to extend our unique befriending service to help more older people who may have limited opportunities to go out and meet people.  The grant will also support the continuation of the tea parties in PA Housing units that were previously provided by Friends of the Elderly.

The CHEER Parkinson’s Group meets weekly in the Claygate Centre for the Community.  Not only does the group help reduce social isolation and provide respite to carers but it also offers participants access to CHEER’s other services, such as advice on benefits, befriending services, social events and signposting to other services.

Janis Fletcher, Chair of Trustees, says “We are extremely grateful to Walton Charity for this grant.  Our befriending service can truly make a difference to the lives of older people who are unable to get out and about by giving them friendship and company. Furthermore, the Parkinson’s Group offers vital support to Parkinson’s disease sufferers and their carers.  Many of the carers stay with the group for a short time to chat and then go on to have a break, secure in the knowledge that the people they care for are safe and enjoying themselves”.
